Another Generation of Cow Dogs in the Making

I journeyed home last week where one of Daddy's dogs had given birth to thirteen puppies six weeks earlier. The black and tan Florida Cur Dog has been used to gather cows for many generations. This litter is just another group that is heir to that great legacy. Different from the heelers used out West, where cattle tend to move more slowly requiring some gentle prodding from the rear, the Florida cow dog is bred to get ahead of the herd- slowing their pace. Brahmas tend to do well in Florida's warm, humid climate and anyone whose ever worked them on a hot summer day knows there is no limit to their speed, agility and willingness to take flight at the sight of a horse trailer and a few trained dogs. At six weeks old these puppies already respond to a whistle and some basic commands. They'll herd a cat that wanders into their reach and bay it up- holding it in a circle if the cat is a willing participant to their charade. A willingness to work and a love for what they do is bred into them. I know looking over the stall gate at these small puppies that someday soon they'll be running alongside Quarter Horses heading out early one morning to continue the legacy began by their line over one hundred years ago.

I’m amazed, I have to admit. Rarely do you encounter a
blog that’s both equally educative and amusing, and without a doubt, you possess
hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too
few people are speaking intelligently about. I am just delighted I
came across this during my search for something regarding this.
